BATON ROUGE, the United States, July 17 (Xinhua) -- A nightmare fell upon Baton Rouge, capital city of the southern U.S. state of Louisiana, after three officers were shot and killed by a gunmen on Sunday morning, marking the latest tragedy in the shooting incidents-troubled country.

The dramatic attack on police officers, which also wounded three others, came only less than two weeks after a black man was fatally shot by a white police officer in the city.

On Sunday, all the roads leading to the shooting scene were closed down, with light flashing police cars and armed police officers seen almost everywhere in the political hub of Louisiana.

The media area was set far away from the shooting scene, but requests of moving closer were denied by police and reporters were warned of possible detention if they did not return to the designated spot.

Later, police told reporters that the deadly shootout broke out after law enforcement officers, who handled the report of a man carrying a long gun with him at a gas station, were attacked by the gunman. The gunman has been identified as Gavin Long, from Kansas City of Missouri.

Military records showed that Long, who was black, served as a U.S. marine from 2005 to 2010, reaching the rank of sergeant. He was stationed in Iraq from June 2008 to January 2009.

Long attacked the police by using a rifle and a handgun. After he was shot dead, police used a bomb robot to detect whether there were explosives around the shooter.

Police believed that Long, who carried out the attack on his 29th birthday, was a single shooter that acted alone, but they did not know his motive for the killing. The African-American is believed to have posted at least one video on YouTube about recent protests and officer-involved shootings.

The investigation put parts of the city in a temporary state of siege, as police helicopters hovered overhead and authorities urged residents to stay indoors.

Kip Holden, mayor of Baton Rouge, described the shooting as ""a nightmare"" all over again in the city as two police officers shot and killed a 37-year-old black man, sparkling a wave of protests across the nation.

""This is not a Wild West town. This is a town of law and order,"" the mayor said, ""The rhetoric now needs to be toned down to zero.""

Louisiana Governor John Edwards also condemned the shooting, saying in a statement that the shooting was ""an unspeakable and unjustified attack on all of us at a time when we need unity and healing."" He promised to take measures to bring the shooters to justice.

This is the second serious shooting incident that killed police officers in the United States in less than two weeks, after a gunman killed five police officers and hurt seven others in Dallas, a city in the northern part of Texas, on July 7.
