Ron Edwards: The book jacket blurbs mention John le Carré and Len Deighton, but the most apt comparison for me is Tyler's Last Train From Berlin. Alec is a study of the modern man: ambition for everything, confidence in nothing; an abuser of his friends who thinks friendship is his highest value; perceives himself as a free spirit yet hungers for authoritarian approval so badly that he grovels to anyone who directs authority at him. The perfect spy as yuppie - it's a pretty horrific portrait.
